    I was invited to the degree examination of a doctoral student at Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) as a judge. During the question and answer session, I was a little puzzled by some of the rules that do not apply to degree examinations in Japan, such as the need to say a spell-like phrase before asking a question, and the need for only the person asking the question to wear a cap. In addition, the examiners were required to wear the official gown or morning gown of each university, and I borrowed a Tokyo Tech gown from the Co-op and brought it with me.
